Pain Relief Outpatient Clinic

Your first visit

If you are referred to the Pain Outpatient Clinic by your GP or another treating specialist, an appointment will be made with the pain specialist team. The team consists of pain specialists and

a pain specialist nurse.

You will most likely be treated by the same pain specialist/nurse specialist each time, but in some cases, to ensure the continuation of treatment, you may also be helped by another pain specialist.

You must bring the referral letter from your treating specialist or general practitioner to the first consultation and have completed the online questionnaire. Without this referral letter and the completed questionnaire, your treatment may not be possible at that time.

During your first visit, the specialist will talk to you about your symptoms and perform a physical examination. After this, the results will be discussed with you and treatment will be proposed. Sometimes

additional tests may be required, or information from previous

treatments may be requested.

Locations

The Pain Outpatient Clinic has two locations: the Ikazia Hospital (Rotterdam) and the Slikkerveer Outpatient Clinic (Ridderkerk). The location for your first visit will be clearly indicated.

The route

If you need an injection/nerve block, this usually takes place at the Surgery Department of the Ikazia Hospital.

The treatment then does not take place at the Pain Outpatient Clinic.

This has to do with the quality requirements for safety and the availability of certain X-ray equipment.

In some cases, injections/nerve blocks

can take place at the Pain Outpatient Clinic. You will be told about this during your consultation with the specialist.

The central admission planning will make an appointment for you for the treatment.

You will receive a letter confirming the date and

time you are expected at the hospital.

Please sign in at the registration column on the day of the treatment. You will then be referred to the waiting room of the Reception. After your registration, you will go to the department where you will be admitted for treatment. The nurse will show you around the ward.

You will be taken on a bed to the operating room for the treatment.

Please let us know whether you have any allergies and if you are taking any blood thinners.

Some injections/nerve blocks require you to stop taking blood thinners beforehand. This will be discussed with you in advance. After the treatment, you will remain in the recovery room for a while. You will then return to the nursing ward.

Depending on the treatment, you will either stay on the ward for some time or you can go home immediately.

You are not allowed to go home alone, someone must accompany you.
